This issue with nvidia slowness has been ongoing for the past 2 months (Dec 2016 - Feb 2017). Most if this has been due to windows updates for those using the last few graphics driver versions. Which have shown to be POOR performing. (this has been noted on nvidia forums as well) That is. The lastest (and greatest) driver does NOT mean improvements or a better experience. (unfortunately) So, my recommendation.
Mar 29, 2015 - A friend bought a G551 with 960m. He tried to play Total War: Attila but couldn't because it was asking for updated drivers. We tried to install. I have driver version 10. Dated to 2015-08-05. Unlike the other post, I am not getting screen flickering. The screen simply freezes for a second and then resumes as normal, and I get a notification that the Intel HD graphics driver stopped responding and recovered itself.
DOWNGRADE your driver to a OLDER version or the last version (or date) you can recall which worked? And, please post here, what driver version (and windows version?) are you using? That is, so you and everyone better understands when the slowness problem occurred? (thanks) 1 - Driver version (when the slowness occured or date noted when this)? 2 - Past Driver version (or date when there was NO slowness)?. The last driver version mentioned in the forums which seemed to work well for some people was '368.79' (not sure where they got it?) Here's the nvidia search/download page. For me, because I used multiple versions of SolidWorks (2012-2017) on the same system using Windows 8.1.
Or what I've found to works well in general using all the 2D/3D progrrams I have, is a older driver. And the other versions which work well were. Or, during the time frame.
June-Nov of 2016) 362.00 (and for windows 10, Cuda 7.5 (if you use Visualize) 368.39 (and for windows 10. Cuda 8.0 (if yuo use Visualize) Here is a recent thread.
For reference: (it's a very long read).
Good morning, I just got a new Lenovo Y50-70 few days ago. Specs are: CPU: i7-4720HQ @2.6Ghz RAM: 16 Go Storage: 1 To Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4600 + Nvidia GTX 960M OS: Windows 8.1 (64 bit) First, When I had Windows 8.1 I had a relatively old driver (from 10/2014 I think) for my GTX with some crashings like Watchdog Violation and some missing libs as I remember. When I updated it to a new version I had the same problem I will face with Windows 7: Black screen after 'Windows Starting.' Anyway, I prefered removing Windows 8.1 and installing Windows 7 Pro (64 bit) just because I used to work on this OS! After that, I started installing drivers, everything went okay, I install a driver and restart my computer and it works fine!
The GPU was not recognized until I finally installed the GTX driver, and when restarted my computer I got once again the same black screen just after 'Windows Starting'. I tried to wait but with no result! So the only 2 solutions I had were to chose UMA instead of Switchable Graphics in the BIOS settings so I won't be using the GTX anymore, or to restore the system to its last 'good' start so before installing that driver.
I tried many versions of the driver (From Windows Update, From Nvidia's website, from Lenovo's website.) and removed everyone of them before installing another one (using DDU) but again with the same results (except for the driver from when Lenovo's website that failed to install, after extracting, by failing to recognize the GPU and told me things like 'No appropriate driver to be installed', and problems with the OS). I hope you will be able to help me finding a solution! I will be very thankful! Best regards. So I did as you told me to do, Installing went fine and as we know we must restart to finish the insall. So when I restarted my computer I had once again the black screen just after 'Starting Windows.' And I can't go any further Please notice that I used to install a couple of versions of the graphics driver from Lenovo support and what happens when I restart after installing is a black screen for like 10 seconds always after starting windows, after that I get the desktop for a while and then I start having sort of low fps even when only moving the mouse.
Okay so I bought Torchlight 2 and don't have the steam version and am wondering how to get mods to work for the non-steam version as I don't really see a ton of mods outside the steam workshop.
Finally computer completely freezes so I have to restart using directly the button and go to BIOS to disable the Nvidia GPU so I can use my PC.
