Band-in-a-Box - this is probably the best program for music creation. During long-term development program has acquired a very large functional and more popular among the fans to make music very quickly.

Band in a Box Dixieland Songs Band in a Box Dixieland Tunes This is my collection of traditional jazz or dixieland tunes in a Band in a Box (\'BB\') format. It is an ongoing project and I am adding more tunes as I have the time. There are over 250 titles in this list as of this writing, although not all of them are distinct items. In some cases a tune appears both with a melody and without the melody (chords only). Songs with melodies have an extension starting with.M (e.g.,.MGU,.MG1). Songs with chords only have the extension beginning with.S (e.g.,.SGU, sg9). The file to download is below.

It is a compressed, zipped file. The Tunes folder you can handle one of several ways. You can keep them in this separate folder and choose that as your \'Favorites\' folder when you are looking for BB songs. Or you can drop them loose into your BB general folder, where they will mix with everything else in that folder.

You will need to choose the \'Rebuild List\' choice in order for your new tunes to appear in the \'Songs\' list. I have included some tips and ideas which might be of help to a new user of BB. I can change the key. I can change the accompaniment as I wish, say from a dixie beat to a salsa style or a rock, techno, or a jazz style.

The styles BB offers are nearly endless. I can print out lead sheets in various keys for members of my band.

The easiest way to use BB is to enter the chords for a song (if your tune is not already in my list), choose a style, key, tempo and play it. BB creates a full accompaniment in the style you have chosen and you are launched. BB\'s has very many bells and whistles and I have only explored a few of them. The one I have found most useful, besides key, style and tempo changes, is the \'Loop\' feature ( #3 below).

If you highlight the chords in a section of the tune that you want to work on--say the bridge of the song--and then click on Loop, it will just keep replaying that section, over and over, giving you a chance to develop your improvisation over that portion of the song. Clicking button #1 brings up the Styles List.

There are a huge number of these. At the top is a \'Preview\' button which allows you to listen to how your tune (or the chords you have entered) will sound in any highlighted style. When you add more styles you should \'Rebuild\' the styles list. Clicking button #2 brings up the Songs list. In some earlier and Mac versions of BB, this list was composed of all those BB tunes residing in the BB folder. Newer versions of BB allow you to select a \'Favorite\' folder so as to restrict the song list to only those tunes you are interested in dealing with. The Songs List also needs to be rebuilt when you add more tunes.

One works with the notation part of the program to enter the melody line for a song. It takes a little while to get used to, but after a while I have gotten pretty quick at entering melodies using the mouse and the computer keyboard. You get to the notation entry area by clicking on the button marked #4 above or with the command Control-O. Control-O brings up a floating notation window that you can move to a convenient position on your screen.

(When I first got the program I tried entering the melody from a MIDI keyboard but I found that my piano playing accuracy was so poor that I spent more time correcting my mistakes than it took me to enter it using the mouse and the computer keyboard from the start. You may have better results.) If you want to enter notation, you will make your way to the \'Editable Notation Window\', in which a treble and bass staff will appear with dotted vertical lines representing each beat. This is how that window looks: In order to get the vertical dotted lines you must click on Button D. When those lines appear you can now enter notes. Look at those dotted lines. If there are 3 per beat you are probably in a swing style with a triplet feel. I have found it much easier to enter eighth and sixteenth notes if I change that so that there are 4 dotted lines per beat.

You can do this from the \'Notation Options Dialog Box\' ( button A above) or you can choose a style (Like Pop Ballad Style) and that will bring up 4 lines per beat. Also I recommend Mono Entry Mode, which allows only one note at any beat position. Now you just point the cursor at line and note you want and it appears.
