The fork availability issue is nothing new. Manufacturers do it all the time. They have such tight part allocations around anticipated sales and production schedules and the spare parts sector goes to the back of the line. Replacement parts are low on the list of priorities for any new model/design like in this example. Ford really puts everyone in the supply chain in a tough spot when this stuff happens. I guarantee no one in Q/A saw this one coming. I can remember having customers go all Godzilla on me because there were no turbos in the channel for their brand new Swedish shitbox with less than 5K on the clock.
Eventually the manufacturer began buying cars back because they couldn't deliver. It still sucked for everyone involved. It's a good bet they're redesigning the failing part and don't want to put any more 'bad' parts into the distribution channel. NOT good for relations. Doesn't make it any better but it is what it is. Yeah, there's a few videos from people on YouTube that I've been able to find.
The number of people supposedly waiting for transmissions is around 30-50 people, so I guess that might give some insight into the number of people actually affected? The one I found kind of amusing was the video at around 5,000 miles saying the car is solid, even with being rough on the transmission ('I have beat the $#!+ out of this thing for 5,300 miles,' 'no-lift shifted every time I've done a pull,' etc.), but then there's a video at 7,500 miles from the same person saying the transmission broke. Of course, there's the debate on whether or not the driver is at fault, if the car should be able to handle being driven like that considering what it is marketed as, etc. I don't think it is a driver issue, but I think there is a limit to what the car can be expected to endure in stock form. Bottom line: Kudos to Ford for taking care of these people under warranty, along with the loaner vehicles, etc.
