HOW TO INSTALL A KEYSTONE RETAINING WALL SYSTEM. This article will discuss the installation of a Keystone Retaining Wall system. Step One: Prepare the Base Start off by removing all necessary vegetation and dirt from the site. Work out how long you want your Keystone Wall to be, and then excavate the trench to the appropriate depth and width. Once you have done that, you should now level the base.
Now place a 6 inch layer of base material, such as; road base, crushed rock or granular fill. Then compact this layer firmly to about 95% compaction.
Keystone recommends that you bury the units 1 inch for 8 inches of wall height, but do not bury more than three units. This helps to lower the base course below grade locking the wall in place, and also helps prevent erosion. The base trench should be wide enough for the Keystone units plus the drainage zone.
Some contractors prefer to use a concrete base, rather than a gravel base material. It is said to help cut down the installation time frame. Step Two: Installing the First Course Place the Keystone units side by side, with sides touching, onto the base course, making sure they are level on all sides.
Step Three: Inserting the Pins There should be sets of two holes on each of the Keystone units, place the interlocking pins in the front two for near vertical setback and in the back two holes for the setback of the course. Step Four: Install Backfill and Corefill Materials Fill in all the voids in and around each Keystone Block unit.
Use crushed stone or gravel based materials for this function. Then compact all materials appropriately. Use existing soils to backfill behind the drainage zone, and then compact well.
Step Five: Installing Geogrid This step should be followed if the wall is tall or critical. If not, go on to the next step. Excavate the reinforced soil area, removing enough for the length of the Geogrid material, ensuring that the base is always level. Cut the geogrid to the appropriate size for each layer.
